After the blood is drawn, it is tested for ABO group (Blood Type) and Rh type (Positive or Negative) and it is further tested for unexpected Red Cell antibodies as, if these present may cause problems in the recipient.

Blood is further screened for evidence of donor infection with Hepatitis B and C, Human immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) 1 and 2, Syphilis and malarial parasite. This screening has been made mandatory by the Drug Controller of India. The specific tests that are performed are given below:

  1. Hepatitis B Surface antigen (HBsAg).
  2. Hepatitis C Antibody (anti-HCV).
  3. HIV -1 and HIV - 2 Antibody (anti-HIV-l and anti~HIV-2)
  4. Serologic test for Syphillis.
  5. Malarial screening.

We here at PSRI are doing a additional test which further safeguards the patient form Hepatitis B Virus and that is Hepatitis B Core antibody
