What is Capsule Endoscopy

Capsule Endoscopy has revolutionized diagnosis of small intestinal diseases by providing a sensitive and simple means of examining inside of the small intestines. A large part of GI Tract, which is constituted by small intestine was not accessible to viewing through conventional upper GI Endoscopy or Colonoscopy, can be now directly visualized with help of Capsule Endoscopy. Capsule Endoscopy assists in diagnosis of gastrointestinal conditions such as obscure gastrointestinal bleeding, malabsorption, chronic abdominal pain, chronic diorrhoea, tumors, Crohn’s disease and ulcers of the small intestine.

Pill or capsule sized video camera
Takes multiple pictures as capsule passes through the intestine.
Visualizes occult lesions.
Images are stored in a recorder attached to the waist of the patient.
Images from recorder are transferred to computer for further evaluation by the doctor.

 

Convenient to patient as capsule can be swallowed and camera moves naturally of its own. During this period the patient can carry out normal activities.
Painless, does not require anesthesia.
Causes no discomfort to the patient or the physician.
Provides direct visualization of the small intestines and thus helps in the diagnosis of obscure diseases of the small bowel.
