All kinds of diseases pertaining to digestion namely, excess gas formation, loose motions , constipation, bloating, etc are handled in a scientific way. The department is geared to tackle any gastrointestinal or liver related emergencies 24 hours a day. These emergencies could include blood coming out with vomiting, blood in stools, black stool, severe abdominal pain, severe uncontrollable diarrhea, persistent hiccoughs, etc. Commonly managed diseases of the liver include jaundice due to various diseases, including various hepatitis and cancers which can cause blockage of flow of bile from the liver to the intestines.
We run one of the busiest endoscopy units in the country. We perform more that 800 endoscopic procedures in a month. The upper endoscopy is performed by inserting a thin fibreoptic tube through the mouth and it gives us information as to the presence of ulcers in food pipe, stomach or upper small intestine. Lot of treatments are carried out through endoscopy. This includes stopping bleeding from visible ulcers or other lesions using various endoscopic methods. Special kind of upper endoscopy is ERCP where obstruction to the flow of bile by stones or cancers can be tackled by removing the stones and/or putting in various plastic or metallic stents, thus obviating the need for surgery. Colonoscope is inserted through the rectum to see the large intestine and last part of small intestine. It is used to evaluated patients with constipation, long standing loose stools, patients with history of passage of blood in stools and screening for cancer of large intestine. We have with us capsule endoscopy and enteroscopy to look at part of intestines which are not reachable through the routine upper and lower endoscope. As we do most of the endoscopy procedures under sedation, there is no discomfort whatsoever to the patient undergoing endoscopy.
We have a brilliant laproscopic and gastrointestinal surgery team to assist us in managing patients.
