STOMA CLINIC
Stoma clinic at PSRI
We are very happy to start a specialized ‘stoma clinic’, the first of its kind in South Delhi so as to provide specialized care to patients who undergo surgical procedures that necessitate the creation of ‘stoma.
What is a stoma?
A stoma is a surgically created opening which (usually) connects a portion of small or large intestine to the surface of the abdomen (ostomy) so as to allow feces or urine to drain into a plastic bag or other ostomy appliances. A person with stoma is technically referred to as ‘Ostomate’
Why is a stoma created?
Abdominal stomas are being constructed with increasing frequency in the treatment of various malignant, congenital, inflammatory and traumatic conditions. A majority of stomata currently are temporary in nature and are created to facilitate an uncomplicated healing of the intestines following surgical resection and anastomosis (rejoining).
Are there any problems associated with stoma?
A person with stoma can lead an absolutely normal life much similar to his preoperative lifestyle including personal, family and professional ties. However prevalent social customs attributable to drainage of feces or urine in a bag and alteration in physical appearance cause a negative psychological impact and can make ostomates avoid social contacts with family & friends.
How are such problems managed?
The quality of life of the ostomate has been vastly improved by technical advancement in surgery techniques, prosthetic devices and the development of specialized stoma-care and availability of Enterostomal Therapist (ET)
Surgical Treatment
Enterostomal Therapist (ET) provides direct care to patients with abdominal stomas, draining wounds and incontinence, as an educator, consultant and confidant.
An ET thus can be the turning point in the life of an ostomate and help him (or her) to resume his normal activities and regain self esteem.
